All your virtual gaming desires are invented, developed, and then launched directly from the giant iGaming Gigafactory to the millions of casino subscribers across Europe and the UK. If there was one game that dominated the factory’s digital assembly then it would have to be the online slot machine. The increase in popularity for slot gaming never ever seems to slow down.

But while many of you may still think that these online slots represent real casino gaming, you would be mistaken due to recent inventions such as the Theoretical RTP. Long gone are the days when the slot machine needed ‘feeding’ with money before it started to pay out. Nowadays, various mathematical models have replaced the physical cash side of things which helps to add a lot fun to the story of online slots.

While some of you may still remember the simple one-armed bandits of times gone by, the online slot machine of today has taken on a life of its own with multiple features that only a virtual gaming experience can deliver. Make your way into any online casino lobby across Stakersland and you will come across dedicated areas that resemble huge libraries of slot titles that have been developed throughout the history of gaming. Nowadays, the 5x3 online slot grid layout is the go-to design and the appeal here is that it sits nicely in between the older slot design and the modern-day multi-ways pay configuration, but there are many more online slot designs out there that you will come across in the park.

The iGaming Gigafactory is where all your favourite multiplier, wild, scatter, and free spin features are designed, fine-tuned, and fitted into newly built online slots. The betting limit feature is also a large part of the design process, as well as now a being a protective regulatory measure that helps to give you more gaming time in the casino. Playing the right games that fit your budget is one of the many ways in which you can boost your casino entertainment here at Stakersland. You can often spin the reels for as little as £0.10 and up to as much as £100 per spin for the High Rollers out there. However, you can also find many other slot games out there that come with micro limits such as £0.01 per spin, and on the extreme end of the scale some online slots even give you the chance to play upwards of £200 per spin and more.

The theme of a slot game is another important feature that stakers use to pick out their next online slots experience. What some of you may not know though is that you are essentially playing the same virtual game each time, only with slightly modified algorithms and unique branded graphics. Game designers simply follow the current culture trends and then create ‘themes’ to match the gaming preferences of the casino community across Stakersland. Some of the most common and popular themes include Egyptian, Asian, Irish, Sci-Fi, and seasonal games get a lot of spins when the big holidays and events come around each year, such as Christmas, Easter, and Halloween. Online Slots Illustration from Age of the GodsThe iGaming Gigafactory is at the forefront of casino technology and so you will often find new and interesting ways to enjoy the online slots experience. Take the Cluster Pays feature which is a modern idea that removes the old way of paying prizes via paylines. Instead, you need to spin a cluster of symbols to win and then those winning symbols disappear with new symbols falling in their place, giving you multiple chances of winning on every spin.

Online slots not only look great fun, but they are extremely entertaining to play as well and this is all down to the challenge accepted by the designer and marketing teams. However, behind every slot game is a complicated setup of Online Slots Illustration from Age of the Godsmathematical equations that helps to determine how much a game pays out. This is known as the RTP and understanding this will help you find what we like to call the ‘Hot and Cold’ online slots. We will explain all in a short while, but first let us explain the basics of playing a slot game so that we are all on the same page.

How Can I Bet On an Online Slot Game?

If you are new to the online gaming world of Stakers then playing online slots does not get much easier. The paytable and information buttons are there to help and guide you with all the features and prizes, but this is the general process of how to spin the reels:

  • 1

Step up to the lobby, pick your slot game, and choose the number of credits that you want to play with, or sometimes your whole bankroll will be transferred into the game. All of this money will come from your online wallet if you are playing on real money online slots.

  • 2

Select your ‘bet per spin’ amount and the number of paylines if the option is available. The Max Bet button is there for those who are looking to reap the rewards with the biggest possible payouts. Bet small and extend your gaming session. Bet big and you could soon be splashing out on your own boat to cruise into the bay of Monte Carlo with your winnings.

  • 3

Monte Carlo awaits and your ticket there depends on if you can match up winning symbol combinations across the online slots reels. Hit the ‘Spin’ button and see how the symbols land, and you will soon find out if you have hit a winning combo. Bonus rounds and feature symbols all help to boost your winnings as you aim to hit the maximum winning prize of the game.

  • 4

Prizes and payouts will be in line with the paytable in the Rules section, but technically, you will be hoping that the Actual RTP of the game is low when you start playing online slots. You can then hope to hit some lucky spins and claim some of the top prize winnings as the Actual RTP would be expected to grow.

What is Hot Online Slot?

Hot online slots are the games where the current SRP (Statistical Return Percentage) is higher than the RTP displayed within the in-game rules. It makes sense to play the games that are paying out more frequently, right? By keeping tabs on which games are in the Hot online slots list each day, you can avoid playing those games that are going ‘cold’ and instead put your money on the games which are more likely to pay out prizes.

What is Cold Online Slot?

Cold online slots are the games where the current RTP is lower than that the RTP being displayed within the in-game rules. The Actual RTP is a useful factor to track and when it starts to creep under the Theoretical RTP then you know you should perhaps try another game until that RTP steps back up to where it should be.

Everything You Need to Know About RTP Rates in Online Slots

Did you know that the licensed levels of RTP being supplied by the casinos are, in fact, different to the Actual RTP levels? Read on as we explain the reasoning behind this and why virtual online slots can neither be called casino or online casino slots.

Theoretical RTP

The Theoretical RTP is based on how much profit margin the designers expect the game to make from roughly 100,000 spins, and this takes on no relation to the real outcome of the Licensed RTP and Actual RTP rates.

Online Slots Illustration from Totem Lightning

Licensed RTP

The Licensed RTP is what would happen if you randomly make millions of spins on the game. This is the main RTP that casinos use to show the overall payout over the course of all bets on online slots. Take note that it is not a guarantee for what you can win individually each time you play.

Online Slots Illustration from Turning Totems

Actual RTP

The Actual RTP is what the game is currently paying out over a specific period of time. Technically, this RTP could either be above or below the Licensed RTP and it all depends on the amount stakers have wagered and won on the online slots in a recent time period, which is usually a month. This gives you a true representation of how the game is paying out right now and not the expected rate over the lifetime of the game, as per the Licensed RTP value.

How to Calculate the Return to Player (RTP) in Online Slots

The RTP value may sound complicated but with a little explanation you will soon understand the concept behind it and, more importantly, how it can help you to find better online slots to play. So, let’s roll up our sleeves and get stuck into a few calculations to make some sense of this all-important RTP value.

To determine the Actual RTP of any game you need to divide the winnings and wagering figures. So, for example, take an online slot that has been designed with an RTP of 91.86% which then accumulates £1,200,000 in wagering and pays out a total of £1,085,000 in wins. The game RTP can be determined as such:

Online Slots Illustration from Lucky Leprechaun Scratch

This shows that the online slot has reached an Actual RTP rate of 90.42% which is actually under the Licensed RTP of 91.86%. This is not the end of the discussion though because volatility is also something that needs to be considered as it indicates the acceptable tolerance below or above the Licensed RTP. It should be understood right from the start that the overall tolerance will decrease the more the game is played.

So, you can expect to see the Licensed RTP and the Actual RTP to get equal or at least very close to each other over a substantial amount of time. This increase of RTP accuracy over time can be best explained with a table. We will assume that the online slot's volatility is 5.6 which means that you can expect to the find the following lower and upper tolerance levels:

number of games playedRange +/- in % from the mean *

*A 95% confidence interval has been calculated for the deviation of the mean. What this means is that even a non-faulty online slot will still have the chance to fall outside the +/- range once in every 20 tests. We could have opted to increase the confidence interval which would essentially minimise the risk of false alarms, but we do not want to make these tolerance levels too wide. Any confidence level over the 99% mark would mean that a non-faulty online slot may only fall outside the +/- range once in every 100 tests. The problem here is that one single measurement error does not necessarily mean that the game or the RNG mechanism is faulty. Only when you have consecutive or multiple errors over a given frequency can you then suggest a malfunction is evident.

If we take a situation where there had been 500,000 spins of the game to accumulate the wagering and winnings figures in the example above, the allowable tolerance would be 1.55 below or above the Licensed RTP of 91.68%. It means that the slot game could be considered to be playing as designed or expected even if it were returning RTP rates between 90.13% and 93.23%.

Theoretical Win in Online Slots

Now for some interesting facts about how casinos use customer data…

The Theoretical Win (or Theo, for short) is the one value that helps casino marketing teams best describe and categorise a casino player. In short, Online Slots Illustration from Treasure MineTheo can be explained as the number that the casino expects you to win from the house and is calculated by taking the total wagering amount and the game that you played on. For the casino teams to compute a Theo value, they only need the amount wagered and the house edge of the slot game which can be easily found within the rules page of each online slot.

Let us take the online slot example from above with its 91.68% RTP, and which puts the house edge at 0.0814. If a staker plays one million spins at £1 per spin, then you can calculate the Theo by using the house edge of 0.0814 x 1,000,000 which would result in the casino expecting to earn £81,400. Of course, stakers have ups and downs and some may win more, and some may win less. Regardless, the casino can still use the total wagering amount and the house edge to find the Theoretical Win.

Calculating the Theo value for any staker is purely so the casino can judge their individual worth and that is all. The total win or loss does not come into the equation, but what it does help to do is give the casino marketing teams a way to strategize promotions and reinvestment plans on a staker to staker basis. Tracking a staker’s Theo over time can provide invaluable data to forecast their future action and wagering and ultimately, it all comes down to how much the casino will decide to reinvest into the staker.

Online Slots Illustration from Treasure Mine

Here is how the Theo value may get utilised at an online casino in Stakersland. If a staker plays our example slot game for 8 hours at £5 per spin and is currently playing at 200 spins per hour, that staker would have wagered a total of 8 x £5 x 200 = £8,000. If we take out of the equation the fact that the staker may or may have won big and ignore what actually happened whilst playing the online slot. The Theo can be calculated at 0.0814 x £8,000 = £651.20. If the casino then decides to reinvest at a rate of 25% of the Theo value, the casino will then have 25% of £651.20 to reinvest into that one staker, which comes to £162.80. In this case, perhaps the staker is given a bundle of free spins that come with a £150 maximum withdrawal limit. The casino knows that, in theory, they have won much more than the possible £150 winnings from those free spins, even if the staker did win £150 from the initial session on the online slot.

Online Slots Illustration from Dwarf Mine

Understanding how to calculate the Theo is a bit of an “art” and this is down to the fact that some stakers can use strategic decisions on games like blackjack and video poker. Not everyone will use the optimal strategy and therefore, not everyone will play to the optimal house edge. It is a lot easier for online slots because it is all down to the RNG mechanism. But the point is that some Theo values may end up with the casino over or underinvesting in a staker, and this can then lead to all sorts of adverse effects in how the staker perceives the casino. A period of overinvestment would then lead to those stakers losing out once the casino tries to lower the levels of promotional value, and the same goes for underinvesting, stakers may simply feel that the casino is “cheap” and not willing to treat their members.

Various Terms & Explanations Used By Casinos

The Link Between RTP & Winning Frequency

The RTP of a slot game alone will not indicate how much you can win, and it cannot help you to dictate the winning outcome of games. Take, for example, two online slots that offer a 96% RTP, one of these may pay out once every nine spins on average and the other may pay out once every five spins on average. This is all down to the volatility of a game, which we will explain in more detail later on. Online slot fans generally believe that games which payout infrequently offer larger prizes, and those games that fire out payouts frequently every couple of spins offer smaller sized prizes. This shows that although the overall RTP of two slot games are the same, the individual payout frequency can be completely different and so you cannot predict and guarantee the winning frequency of the game.

What Do You Mean by RTP?

Return to Player is often written as the acronym ‘RTP’ and relates to a percentage value given to a casino game. The percentage value determines the amount of money that will get paid out from the slot game over its lifetime. Games with higher RTP values will give you more winning potential in the long run. Online slots can offer differing RTPs depending on the casino, and so keep this in mind if you do play at several casinos. You may get better winning potential value at one casino over another.

How RTP Works?

The all-important rule when it comes to RTP value is that it is only a theoretical calculation based on statistics. There is no guarantee that a game with a 98% RTP will pay out £98 for every £100 wagered on it. You should think of the RTP as an average based on all stakers playing the online slot over a long period of time, and it also does not take into account any big random wins or any unlucky losing streaks.

How Can The RTP Be Calculated By Players?

The formula for working out the RTP is straightforward once you know the details that are required. So, if you are looking to calculate how much you could earn from your wagering over a specific time period, then this is what you will need: Total Net Winning Amount / Total Amount Wagered = Your RTP

RNG stands for Random Number Generator and this design mechanism is used on every spin of a slot machine, and as such, it is fundamental to the legitimacy of online slots everywhere. In simple terms, the RNG ensures that every spin of the reels is generated randomly. This is why we always say that you cannot determine your future spins based on what has happened in your previous spins. Every spin is random and disconnected from all other spins. Therefore, if everything is random then you cannot predict the frequency of payouts on online slots using its RTP value.

The RTP & House Edge Connection

The RTP and House Edge of any casino game are always opposites. The house edge shows the overall advantage a casino has as a percentage value, and the RTP shows the winning potential each player has as a percentage value. The house edge is essentially how the casino make their money on each game over a long period of time. They cannot factor in big wins and lucky streaks, but the house edge will always even out over time. This simple example will show you how to calculate each of the percentages - If an online slot has a 90% RTP, then the House Edge will be 10%. It is as simple as that.

Slots With High RTP

Being aware of the RTP of any slot game is a vital part of any slot gamers strategy. Understanding the percentage of how much each game is designed to pay back to its stakers can help you determine whether you should play the game or not. Below you can find a list of the some of the top High RTP online slots currently available at Stakersland.

Determining RTP Accuracy

Casino game are now tested on a regular basis in accordance with the ever-tightening licensing regulations. This allows a constant review of the fairness of online slots and to ensure that games are not being tampered with. With this in mind, the new concept called Actual RTP helps stakers to find out the accuracy of the licensed RTP. You can think of this as the current live RTP rate of the game, and as we found out earlier on, this can fluctuate above and below the official RTP value over the course of its lifecycle.

The Actual RTP can be described as below:

Actual RTP
Total Amount Won
Total Amount By Casino

If you work out the Actual RTP then you will often notice a big difference between that and the licensed and theoretical RTP detailed in the help page of any online slot.

Let us explain with an example using a fictional online slot called ‘Staker Reels’ with a licensed 95% RTP, this is the RTP that the developers have officially designed the game with. However, if we test the overall performance of the Staker Reels slot game over the period of one month and find out that stakers have won £180,000 and the casino has accumulated £200,000 in total bets from all stakers. Then the Actual RTP can be calculated as in the formula below.

Actual RTP for Stakers Reels:

A 5% difference can be found between the Licensed RTP and the Actual RTP of the Stakers Reels slot game. It shows that the casino is currently making 5% more profit on the game and so it is clearly not worth playing from a stakers point of view. This is why we have created our exclusive Hot and Cold online slots feature, as this clearly shows which of the games in the park are performing above or below their Licensed RTP rate.

Why Do Large Progressive Jackpot Slots Come With Low RTPs?

All progressive jackpot slots come with RTP values of around 80-90%, but why is this? It is all down to the large amounts of money being paid out when someone gets lucky and triggers the jackpot prize. The slot developer,Online Slots Illustration from Lucky Little Devil who is responsible for paying out the jackpot, uses this extra profit being made from the low RTP and puts it aside to pay for the prize on that day someone gets lucky. The reason why these RTPs are so low is directly linked to the fact that these jackpots are often in the range of hundreds of thousands and sometimes millions of Euros. It is why some stakers stay clear of progressive jackpot slots because the gaming sessions are usually over a lot quicker, due to the less frequent payouts. But if you want to win the big prizes and you are willing to take the bigger risks, then the progressive online slots are the way forward.

RTP And The Influence Of Volatility

The volatility or variance of online slots is something that is also related to the RTP, just like the payout frequency and the house edge. You will often see a slot games volatility or variance described as high, medium, or low, or sometimes as a numbered format from 1-10. Online slots with low volatility will pay out more frequently, but with smaller sized prizes. Slots with high volatility tend not to pay out frequently, but the prizes will likely be bigger when they do. Therefore, an online slot that offers medium volatility brings a much more balanced payout system in terms of the prize amount and the winning frequency, and this is why many stakers tend to enjoy medium volatility slot games the best.

Our Final Thoughts On RTP

The RTP rate is an important factor when deciding on which online slot to play next, but it should not be the only factor that you think about. RTP rates are not a guarantee and things like volatility should also be factored into your decision. The truth behind the Actual RTP and the Hot and Cold slots should also be something to think about, too. After all, every slot game is designed with the RNG mechanism and that means every spin is random, but there ways to monitor these online slot games and various tips to remember when playing them, which we will explain a bit later on.
