Premier League: A Must for Your Betslip?

Premier League stands proudly at the top of the professional game in football. Thousands of people are involved in making the fixtures of Premiership a staple in the sporting life across the world. Bookmakers, in their turn, place it in the top of their Leagues tabs, and an average of 2.7 million pounds are bet on each Premier League game. How does it still manage to stay in the headlines 30 years on, and why should you enrich your betting portfolio with a bet on a Premiership fixture or two? Let’s delve deeper to find out.

The English football league system follows a hierarchical structure, hence its name — the football pyramid. The pyramid consists of leagues further subdivided into association football clubs throughout England. Also included in the league are teams from Wales, Guernsey and Jersey, and the Isle of Man. It’s a dynamic system with promotion and relegation among leagues at different levels. This allows even the smallest clubs to theoretically rise to the top of the system, which is the Premier League.

The Premier League is the highest tier in England’s football pyramid. Twenty teams compete for the honor of being named English champions. The Premier League, or the Premiership, is the most watched league on the planet. Yearly, the league attracts dozens of thousands of spectators, making the numerous stadiums in the UK operate close to their capacity. Moreover, the English Premier League has nearly 5 billion viewers worldwide. It is watched by over 1 million people every week in America, beating Major League Soccer, America’s top-flight league. Needless to say that with so much attention from the public and the media, this league creates lucrative wagering opportunities by trend-savvy new UK betting sites which are especially eager to cover major sporting events in great detail.

Getting to Know the Basics

The Premiership takes place between August and May, featuring teams competing both home and away throughout the season. It boasts some of football’s greatest clubs, who play each other twice during a 12-month span: once at home, then away. That means each club plays 38 matches throughout this timeframe.

The competitors get three points for a win, one point for a draw, and none for defeat. The Premier League title is won by the team that has the most points at season’s end. Conversely, teams that finish in the third position at the end the campaign are automatically relegated to the English Football League Championship, or the second-tier of English soccer. These teams are replaced with three clubs promoted from the Championship, i.e. the teams that finish first, second, and third in the end-of-season playoffs.

If two clubs finish with the same amount of points, their position in the Premier League is determined by goals difference, followed by goals scored, most points from head-to-head matches and finally most away goals scored during these encounters.

Why has Premier League Risen to Popularity?

The Premier League is immensely popular for many reasons. One reason is its world-class matches held each week. Moreover, its international diversity allows different play styles to be shown by various teams. Much of Premiership’s success can be attributed to how it evolved over time and what aspects of football it managed to showcase at different points throughout its existence.

In 1992, the 104-year-old Football League was dissolved. It had previously operated with four divisions. On the other hand, the Premier League would have a single-division, while the Football League would have three. The competition format was not changed; promotion and relegation among the Premier League remained the same as before with three teams being relegated from their leagues and three being promoted.

At the very beginning, there were 22 members of the Premier League:

  1. Arsenal
  2. Aston Villa
  3. Blackburn Rovers
  4. Chelsea
  5. Coventry City
  6. Crystal Palace
  7. Everton
  8. Ipswich Town
  9. Leeds United
  10. Liverpool
  11. Manchester City
  12. Manchester United
  13. Middlesbrough
  14. Norwich City
  15. Nottingham Forest
  16. Oldham Athletic
  17. Queens Park Rangers
  18. Sheffield United
  19. Sheffield Wednesday
  20. Southampton
  21. Tottenham Hotspur
  22. Wimbledon

In 1992—1993, the league hosted its first season. Manchester United won this inaugural competition, ending a 26-year wait to become crown champions in England. This breakthrough made United the competition’s dominant team. They won seven of the first nine trophy, two League and FA-Cup doubles, and a European triple. Arsenal F.C., the United’s most persistent competitor, won the 1997—1998 League, which would create a duopoly over the next five years.

In the 2000s, Liverpool and Arsenal rose to great competition. Another significant competitor was Chelsea who won the 2004—2005 Premier League. A significant feat was achieved by Arsenal, the first and only Premier League team to finish a campaign without losing one game in 2003-2004.

In the years that followed 2009, there was a change in the structure and composition of the “Top Four”, i.e. Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United, as Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City broke into the top four on a regular basis. This transformed the “Top Four’ into the “Big Six”.

The “Big Six” still possess significant influence and financial power off the football arena. Furthermore, these clubs argue that they should receive a higher share of the Premiership revenue because of the global stature of their clubs and the quality of the football they play.

What are the Betting Options for Premier League?

Considering the wide popularity of the league, it’s easy to see why it would become a hot spot for bettors and bookmakers across the world. Moreover, online bookmakers strive to put forward special free bets to incentivise both new and professional bettors to try out one of the Premiership markets.

The Premier League offers hundreds of betting markets, so it is essential to understand the odds and different betting opportunities for this competition. There are various wagering options available for Premier League football fans; these include outright bets on tournament or league outcomes as well as individual Premier League game bets like Asian Handicaps or Both Teams to Score wagers.

Let’s first cover the bets placed on the outcomes of individual Premier League games. These are the most popular:

  1. Match Result 1×2 : At the end of the 90-minute plus additional time, select the result (Home win, Draw, or Away win).
  2. Asian Handicap: Each team will be assigned a goals handicap to determine the winner.
  3. Goal Total: Selecting between over and under a certain number of goals.

Each bookmaker has a market dedicated to which Premier League team will win the title. This market, commonly known as Premier League Title Odds, and it’s available both before and during the season.

Different bookmakers have different odds of winning the Premier League. It is important to take into consideration only the best betting sites for a given betting market to maximise the value of every single bet. Premier League outright winner bets are no exception. It’s a smart idea to check out several options in order to ensure that you get the best possible odds of winning your selection.

The odds of a team winning the Premier League title change throughout the course of the season depending on their performance and position in the league table. Bookmakers’ odds also take into account factors like injury to key players and new developments within the football industry when offering odds to potential title winners.

No matter what title or relegation positions are decided, the Premier League Top 4 race keeps viewers on the edge of their seats until the final game of the season. Because the top four Premier League spots are important, they determine which teams will play in the Champions League next season. This not only adds prestige but also promises financial rewards to the club.

Another huge betting market for Premier League is top four odds. This market can be betted on by picking one team to finish in the Top 4. However, you can also place a bet predicting which teams will finish in the Premier League top 4 for this season. But first 4 positions are from the only options of this kind. Other prominent markets include Top 2/4/6/10.

Bettors love to guess which team will finish in the Premier League’s bottom three. The Premier League relegation market is available both before and during a season, with odds fluctuating according to a team’s position in the table.

Premier League relegation odds don’t just affect clubs who will be sent to the Championship. You can also place wagers on whether or not a club will remain in the Premier League.

The Premier League Top Goalscorer market is another popular option for bettors. Just like other Outright Markets, you can place wagers on who will score the most goals throughout the season.

Bookmakers often offer more niche odds on what player will be the best goalscorer at their club. This is a great benefit for those who are familiar with the league, especially the clubs expected to finish lower in the league table. Many bettors are able to make educated guesses about who will finish as the top goalscorer for Arsenal or Manchester City, however are there many bettors that can predict who will be the top goalscorer for Burnley or Bournemouth?
