The first participant of the DFB Cup will be determined on Tuesday evening. Die Werkself hosts the record holder, who’s going to have their 250th match in the German cup. There, the Munichers celebrated the victory for 212 times and were defeated for 37.
The journey to the semifinals was definitely tough for die Werkself. In the first round, Leverkusen clashed with Karlsruher SC from the 3rd league, which resulted in a confident 3:0 away win. In the second round, Bayer hosted 1. FC Union Berlin from the second Bundesliga, having yet again got a 4:1 victory. The subsequent two rivals from the Bundesliga forced Heiko Herrlich’s squad to demonstrate their utmost. After meeting Bayer, Mönchengladbach (0:1) and Bremen (2:4) were kicked off from the tournament.
FC Bayern München began their journey to the title with a match against Chemnitzer FC, having won over the outsider from the 3rd league with a score 5:0. In the second round, the Munichers were waiting for the first serious test: a meeting against the vice-champion. FCB did pass further only after the penalty shoot-out. In the next round, München knocked out Dortmund, the current cup holder, with the score 2:1, taking a big step toward the trophy. The quarter-final against SC Paderborn 07 was an easy touch for FCB — 6:0.
Both teams have recently indicated good shape. Bayern München won their sixth championship in a row in the 29th round ahead of schedule. Jupp Heynckes’s squad successfully has made it through to the Champions League semi-finals, dreaming now about the treble. Leverkusen has obtained two important victories in the Bundesliga and is ready to confidently enter into a fight with the Rekordmeister. Will the team of Heiko Herrlich manage to knock out a heavy favorite from the cup?
The match starts on Tuesday, April 17, at 20:45.
