Vikings is a brand new slot game from the gang over at Net Ent. There has been a lot of gossip about this gaming experience, and we've recently uploaded it to our site. In order to give our players some sense of whether or not they should play Vikings, we decided to try it out for a few hours and put it through its paces. That way you can decide if it is the game for you.
This slot game is based on the popular show by the same name – Vikings. But if, like us, you haven't seen that show, don't worry – the game plays fine on its own. Knowing about the show simply enhances your experience.
It starts off with a long intro video of the Vikings in their boat, and then fighting to set the scene. Then, the game kicks in. It starts out with five reels and three rows.
As the reels spin, you won't pick up many winning combinations in the regular game. That said, there is one thing that does pull in wins on a regular basis.
When the shields come down is the most obvious time in regular play to make a win. They will randomly cover roughly six spots on the board, and then spin to reveal that they have turned them into one of the Vikings – nearly always guaranteeing a win. This event is entirely random, but pops up just often enough to save you from whatever losses you've experienced leading up to it.
Where the winnings come in is during the free spins round. If you land three or more of the Raid Spins icons, you'll be taken through another brief video and then brought to the raid. When you arrive, you'll discover you now have seven instead of five reels.
This really pushes your winning potential up a whole lot higher. Because the Viking icons are often somewhat stacked, it doesn't take a lot to earn a win. We say “somewhat stacked” because sometimes you only get two instead of three of them. This leads you to just see the icons without a head – but don't worry, they still count towards a win.
With all these stacked icons playing out over seven reels, we almost never had a free spin that didn't pay out. This upped our reserves, and then sent us back to the regular game.
All in all, we found this to be a very low variance game overall. We didn't end up very much above what we started out with. But we didn't end up much below it, either. Some people love low variance games and some hate them. You know who you are – and if low variance games are for you, this would be a good choice.
The excitement of winning in the free spins mode is at the heart of this game. But you won't get that many thrills in the main game. For that reason, we give it three out of five stars. We do wish that there had been more decent wins during the regular game. That would have pushed up its score a bit.
That said, Vikings is solid at what it's trying to do. And we are sure fans of the television show will have a blast playing it and seeing their favorite characters pop up.
Overall not a spectacular game but one that is rock solid and knows what it is doing. For low variance fans this game is a must to try out.
