Viking Clash is the newest release from Push Gaming. It looks a little different from your average online video slot, so we decided to test it out for our readers. We loaded it up and played for a solid two hours to give you the most honest review of the game available anywhere.
Here's what we found:
The game starts off with two different grids. Each grid has three rows and five reels. Both of them spin at the same time – doubling your chances for a win on each spin.
The icons you'll find on the grids include runes, Vikings, axes, and hammers. Most of your wins will come from getting identical runes lined up. These paid off at between .30 and 3.45 for us off of a .50 credit bet.
Winning combinations from kings and axes tended to happen much less often than with the runes. And when it did happen, it didn't pay off that much more than the high ends with the runes. In fact, we found that winnings off of both the runes and the higher-value icons were both fairly rare, and didn't hit that much.
What does happen much more often than with other games, however, is the free spin mode. This more than makes up for the spotty returns during regular gameplay.
When we hit on three cannons, the game delivered six free spins. This started off with the cannons shooting wild cards onto nearby icons. These wilds became sticky on both of the gaming grids. As the free spin play went on, more cannons appeared. They, too shot sticky wilds at adjacent rows. Finally, towards the end, a cannon came out and shot a double-paying wild onto the screen. Along the way, we also re-triggered a few free spins. By the time it was over, it had paid off 31.60 – not a bad return for a single .50 credit bet.
We then hit the free spins mode again, this time with four cannons, roughly three minutes later. The feature played out in roughly the same way, but this time we ended up with 36.76 return on our bet. Overall, we are really excited about how often the free spins pop up, and how much they pay.
This, of course, does make Viking Clash a high variance game. You'll be playing and just getting very low payouts, and then bam, suddenly you find the cannons and rake in the money.
The two grids added an extra level of excitement to the game. They did not make the game more difficult to follow at all; they just provided more ways to win.
Of course, we would have liked the smaller wins to be more frequent. But that's not going to happen in a game where free spins are happening all the time. So if you can play through and wait for the cannons to show up, you can do very well.
Not everyone likes high variance games, but if you do, this is the one for you. It's cutting-edge and has all the features you could desire.
We give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
