Halloween is right around the corner, and NetEnt has released a game just in time for the holiday. Is it great – or is it just another attempt to cash in on the holiday season? We want to know – and more importantly, we want to be able to tell you so you know whether or not to play! With that in mind, we spent a couple hours with Halloween Jack to get a feel for the game and pass on our experience to you.
First off – this is not a rip-off trying to cash in on the holiday. It's the real deal. It's spooky and a little scary, and will be a delight for horror fans everywhere.
Now onto our biggest impression of the game – it's all about free spins. If that's your thing, you will absolutely love this game. The jack-o-lantern is your wild card in the basic game, but it's more than that because it also triggers free spins.
Whenever you get the jack-o-lantern, you'll be given a free spin. Then the jack-o-lantern will move over one space to the left. You'll continue to get free spins until one spin after the jack-o-lantern leaves the board. That's a nice touch, giving you an extra free spin once the wild is gone.
But the game then suddenly gets even better. The golden chest is the scatter icon, and you will need at least three of them on the board to be rewarded with 10 free spins. However, during those free spins, when you see a wild card you'll get the additional free spins from the bonus game, meaning that those 10 free spins easily become 20 to 40 free spins.
Beyond that, in the free spin game there are three icons on the right hand side of the board, and lanterns have now been added to the reels. Every time you get a lantern, you'll get a star on one of the icons. Get three and an extra wild will come out. It is regular size, and like the jack-o-lantern it gives you free spins until it moves off the board.
With six stars you'll earn a double sized wild card added to the board. It also gives you free spins, and moves to the left until one spin after it's gone.
Meanwhile, with nine stars you win the ultimate wild card. It's the grim reaper of death – and it's the size of an entire reel! And like the other wild cards, it keeps giving out free spins until it's off the board.
We won nearly 4,000 credits after getting the grim reaper of death to appear. We find that incredible.
This game is the real deal. For the first time ever, we are awarding a game five out of five stars. It's honestly that good. It will appeal to all sorts of players. It's fast paced. It's easy to understand and it really delivers the goods.
A lot of studios just crank out cheaply-made novelty games for the various holiday seasons. That's not what NetEnt has done here. Instead, they have made a high class game you'll want to spend a lot of time with – not just around Halloween.
It looks beautiful. It plays well. Honestly we were shocked when we played it at how it has everything we've ever wanted in a slot game.
And of course there are all those free spins. In an age where other companies are getting stingy with their free spins this game is delivering the goods.
Overall an excellent game we believe everyone will love.
